Sad news - Jonathon Swallow

Harrogate Chess Club are sorry to report the death of Jonathon Swallow on Wednesday 1st June 2016. Jonathon was a stalwart of Ilkley Chess Club and joined Harrogate in 2003 as an associate member. He quickly became a key member of the A Team, rarely missing a game and at one point playing on one of the highest boards. He was a terrific character who enjoyed fearless, tactical chess and his passion for the game was always evident. Outside of chess he was a classical music enthusiast and his knowledge of that subject was considerable. He will be missed by so many, not just in Harrogate and Ilkley clubs but across the whole of the county (indeed at the Huddersfield Congress the weekend before his death I was approached by two people asking after him).

Jonathon died in Northern Ireland where he had recently been admitted to a care facility. He will be cremated there but it is expected that there will be a service of remembrance in Ilkley and hopefully a way will be found to honour his memory.
