Harrogate Chess Club at the European Senior Championships

posted 26 May 2015, 13:39 by Andrew Zigmond
The European Senior Chess Championships recently took place in Eretria, Greece with no less than two Harrogate players taking part in the over 65s. Mick Stokes was representing England and Douglas McKerracher entered under the Scottish flag. By chance our representatives were paired in the first round and drew a hard fought game.

Mick then proceeded to win his next two games. After a loss to a Grandmaster in the fourth round and a fifth round draw he defeated Dutch IM Nico Schouten (the defending champion) and finished on a prize winning five and a half points from nine games. Douglas made a slower start but eventually finished on a very respectable three and a half.

Club President Margaret Rowley was also in Eretria. She didn't compete but enjoyed watching the games and was able to introduce herself to one of her heroes, Nona Gaprindashvili (Women's World Champion between 1962 and 1978) who was playing in the Over 65s.

A picture of Mick with legendary English GMs Keith Arkell and John Nunn (participants in the Over 50s section) can currently be found on the English Chess Federation website

A couple of Mick's wins can be found below (subject to technical intervention).
