Aubrey Spalton Memorial Trophy 2016

posted 11 May 2016, 07:54 by Andrew Zigmond

On Monday 18th April 2016 Harrogate pulled off a shock victory against York in the Aubrey Spalton Memorial Trophy. The score in the series is now 13-2 in York's favour with two draws.

Harrogate A skipper Mark Daley was the first to score, putting Harrogate ahead before York appeared to take the initiative with a cluster of wins. However as the results came in Harrogate took a lead they never lost. There was tension as time pressure began to bite; Paul Pritchard was unable to deliver checkmate in time while Ranyl Hughes' opponent overstepped the time limit in a winning position. The game of the match may have been on board 7 where Gordon Marks outplayed his opponent before being hit with an expertly played counter attack - a draw was agreed as a fair result just prior to the time control. Junior Mate Ther's endgame victory against an experienced opponent also merits mention.

As ever the match was played in an excellent spirit with a buffet provided by Richard Tate. For the first time the match was held at the St Robert's Club and Harrogate Chess Club would like to thank them for their hospitality.
